Sheep hunting takes you into the spectacular
basins and peaks of the Rocky Mountains. This is typical "Bighorn"
range that lends itself to intensive hunting using binoculars, spotting scopes
and sheer determination. Much climbing and backpacking is involved and hunters
should be physically prepared for hiking in the mountains. There are two
distinctly separate bands of sheep in the territory. A full curl regulation and
their limit of two to three hunters per year demonstrate their commitment to
manage the sheep in their area for quality. Outfitter offer a 10-day Bighorn
hunt, 1x1 guided, limited to a full curl. A 160-170 class ram would be a good
ram for their area. The rams tend to be lamb tipped, although some may be
broomed, and about 8-9 years of age. When you start the hunt, you will pack
enough supplies for 4-5 days and will stay on the mountain. They use 2 man tents
and/or bivey sacks and freeze-dried food. If a legal ram is not located within
the 4-5 days, you will return to base camp and restock your supplies and try
again. Hunts are 1x1 guided and often a "spotter" will be assisting
from a lower elevation- They have used the same 3 sheep guides, including the
outfitter for the last 6 years. These guides are "diehard" hunters,
and come with a lot of experience. This is a physically demanding hunt and the
terrain is rough. Weather in the mountains can vary dramatically within a 10-day
frame, so be prepared for it all; wind, sun and snow.
