Rocky Mountain Elk - Alberta
Alberta has
a growing population of elk that numbers in the neighborhood of 26,000
animals. They are found predominately along the eastern shadow of the
Rocky Mountains in the high basins and foothills, although, in recent
years, they have been expanding their range into the boreal forest and
parkland regions. At one time it was thought that all of the best bulls in
Alberta were found in Banff, Waterton and Jasper National Parks and they
seldom ventured outside the confines of these protected areas into
adjacent hunting zones until well after the season closed. In the past few
years, however, hunters have been harvesting an inordinate amount of big
bulls, including a non-typical in 1999 that stretched the tape to over 440
inches. Hunters are crediting this to a number of factors, including
several mild winters in a row, better management and more knowledgeable
outfitters. Alberta is peerless when it comes to trophy elk in Canada and
few of the western states can come close to matching the average size of
these big bulls.
BC Outfitters works with several
outfitters that offer both Rifle & Archery Elk
Hunts. Depending on the time of year hunted these elk hunts can be
combined with moose, Whitetail, mule deer and or wolf.
Archery Elk / Whitetail combo Hunt During
the Rut:
The elk hunt is during the start of the rut
in the bow season on a mix of government and privately owned land. The
size of elk they will be looking for is between 250 and 350 pt 5X5 and
6X6's. It is an exciting time to hear the elk bugling and to call them
into bow range. This is a ten-day hunt in order to have a good chance at
getting a good shot at an elk and whitetail.
