Rocky Mountain Bighorn - Alberta
The Rocky Mountain Bighorn is by far Alberta’s most majestic animal, and because
of where it lives, makes it one of the most difficult to hunt.
But with the right area, right equipment, and of course an experienced guide, your
chances are greatly increased in harvesting this much sought after trophy.
Accommodations:While
hunting you will stay in a first rate tent camp with an excellent cook. You will
use this camp as your main base camp and hunt out of it throughout the duration
of the hunt.
You will have to bring your own sleeping bag, and foam mattress.
Hunting Methods and Conditions:You will start each day from the main base camp on horseback,
then usually climb and hike to remote areas, frequently stopping and glassing for
sheep. Your physical condition could make a big difference, so try to condition
yourself prior to the hunt.
Weather at this time could vary, normal season temperatures range between 10 and
70 degrees F., so a variety of clothing that can be layered is a good idea. Wet and
cold conditions are not surprising at this time either, so be prepared.
How to Get There:At
least one day prior to the hunt, hunters will have to arrive in Calgary International
Airport, which is serviced by all major airlines. There you will be picked up and
driven to Caroline, Alberta, where you will spend the night. Accommodations will be
made on your behalf and at your expense. The following day you will set out along
with your guide on horse back and ride to the main camp. The 16 day hunt includes
one day to ride in and one to ride out, leaving 14 days of actual hunting.
Combination Hunts:Additional permits for other species may be available for combination
hunts. Timber wolves are common in these parts, so a license is recommended
