Mountain Goat - Alaska
Mountain goats inhabit steep and broken
mountain terrain from southeast Alaska to Prince William Sound and the
Kenai Peninsula. Goats are found from near sea level to over 10,000 feet.
Males (billies) are found either alone or in groupings of two or three in
steeper, higher elevation country than females (nannies), kids and young
billies. Summer months are spent in high alpine meadows and ridges. During
the winter, forested habitats adjacent to alpine ridges serve as critical
refuges for goats during periods of heavy snow accumulation, and steep
rugged slopes provide important escape terrain from predators.
Goat hunting with this outfitter is an
experience you will not soon forget. All hunts are fair chase.
They target only trophy animals, and you will return home with memories to
last a lifetime.
Goat hunts are boat based and originate in
Sitka. With the winter weather, goats are pushed off the tops
of the mountains down to an accessible level, and we travel to one of
several fjords in our search. Mountains are glassed until a
good Billy is spotted. Then a stalk is planned and executed.
These hunts are by comparison physically easier than most Mountain Goat
hunts, but they are not without physical challenge. Distances
climbed may include very rugged terrain and odd angled shots can increase
the challenge. Hair on these Mountain Goats is extremely long making
them a tremendous trophy second to none. Horns average 9" in
length.
Hunts are conducted in the month of
November.
